Garden Warfare 2 offers over a half dozen dedicated multiplayer modes, should you choose to test your mettle against others online. It's important to note that even if you play solo, you still need to be connected online to play. I found the AI surprisingly capable, making this mode perfectly suited to solo play, and you can swap control to an AI ally at the touch of a button. All multiplayer modes can be played solo with AI partners and opponents, a nice feature if you want to practice before playing against others online. Once you've found a character you like, you can explore the Backyard in single-player, play solo matches, or dive into multiplayer matches. The generous selection of characters keeps the game feeling fresh for a very long time, as you always have a new character to unlock and play. You can switch between the plant and zombie factions by interacting with a kiosk at your home base. NPCs, also strewn across the backyard, offer a variety of missions to undertake. AI plants and zombies spawn and fight for control of the map's centermost park, with the plant base and zombie base situated on either side. After a quick tutorial, you find yourself in the Backyard-the game's hub world.
